New print released: Winter 2009

Hand screenprinted, 3-color art print 'Winter 2009', part of my seasons series and available now. Click for more info!

Yay for cold weather, hot cocoas, snow and bar branches! Yes, that’s right, I mean it. I am a true Northerner because I love Winter. And my newest print is a love letter to an under-rated season.

I just love that absolute quietness that falls with snow in a forest. We have Cardinals here in the winter, and their brilliant red always darts out from the winter pattern of color behind them like a signal, reinforcing the magic of a winter’s day.

Hey hey! So you looking at my Winter 2009 art print, a part of my new Seasons series. This is the fifth print in series of seasonal, limited edition prints that I’ll be releasing. Ready? Here’s the mind-blowing part = there will be 4 per year.

Winter 2009 is my 3-color, all hand screenprinted art print with icy blue, bark brown and scarlet red hand mixed and non-toxic water based inks. Edition of 119. Size: 16 x22 inches (39.4 cm x 55.9 cm.) Paper: acid free & archival Cougar, White 100lb cover weight.

As always, here are a few photos of the print in progress, and you can see more at my Flickr page here too.

3rd & final color ink, ready to go!

Vintage Christmas Cards

The imagery for Christmas cards might seem like a given these days, simple  & bold graphics, perhaps tending towards the nearly unidentifiable winter or generic holiday look. Don’t get me wrong, I love a pure graphic approach to a card. But there is something very engaging and fun about vintage and old-fashioned Christmas cards that really gets my attention.

From the traditional Victorian look:

victorian_christmas

To the very sweet and peaceful 1940’s style, such a contrast to the reality of that era. Don’t you want to live in that little snowy village?:

Dont you want to live there?

And the flowing, natural yet stylized Arts & Crafts-centric 1920s look of this beauty:

1920s

Dashing glamour, sweeping elegance and the highest of hopes translated into a party scene:

And yet, so many cards were not as soft, sweet or traditional, unlike so much of today’s Christmas cheer fare as edited and produced by (perhaps overly) PC and inoffensive greeting card companies. Prime examples of a more ironic, or bitter take on the Season:

And the of course, there is Margaret Keene (you thought it was Walter, didn’t you!) being a little creepy for Christmas:

There was even a time when Christmas celebrations were outlawed in Boston, MA the Protestant heyday. Bah Humbug!

For more vintage Christmas goodness, check out these Flickr pages and groups:  Vintage Christmas: 1945-1970, profkaren’s set  Vintage Greeting Cards and a lovely assortment in sakameg’s Flickr account.

While this isn’t a card, this WPA poster is just the tops.

Winter 2008, art print

Winter 2008 art print

Soft browns fall away and turn to ice-blues and snowy scenes. There is a love story, hidden in the leaves.

I’m excited to finally start this tradition of working on one seasonal print per season. It’s been in my head for a while and it feels good to get moving on it. This is the first print in series of seasonal, limited edition prints that I’ll be releasing. Ready? Here’s the mind-blowing part = there will be 4 per year.

This wintery tale is a 4 color hand printed screenprint, with black, bark brown and icy-blue transparent inks. Blue over prints brown to make a soft grey and the brown leaves are distressed as they fall off the trees. Get it? I thought that you might. Edition of only 85. Size: 16.5w x 22h inches. Available at my website, starting today.
