Our new (re)release, "Coffee, Thee & Me" 3-color all hand pulled silkscreen art print. Click the above image to purchase or for more info!

Sometimes the dead do come back. Yep! It’s true. There are a few long-sold out art prints that we have been considering bringing back from the archives and we’re happy to announce that 2 of our most requested silkscreen art prints are back in a big way.

“Fair Is Fair Trade” was originally designed and printed in 2008, featuring dark-roast brown and an Aegean Blue iconic NYC coffee take out cup with the slogans “Fair is fair. Justo es justo” supporting the freshly poured cup of joe.

“Coffee, Thee & Me” was originally designed and printed in 2009 featuring and elephant and a giraffe, super best friends sharing a moment of love and fidelity over a steaming cup of fresh coffee.

Both coffee-themed screen prints were created as a part of an art show initiative to raise awareness and funds for a fair trade coffee collective which Mugshots Coffee House in Philadelphia, PA works with regularly. Both coffee-forward print runs sold out quickly, and being major coffee fans as well as strong believers in not only supporting fair trade practices, but in putting our money where our mouths are and giving back creatively. To that end, we are really excited to re-release and re-print both designs as open edition art prints with a portion of the sale of each print benefiting Fair Trade USA. Fair Trade USA educates consumers, brings new manufacturers and retailers into the Fair Trade system, and provides farmers with tools, training and resources to thrive as international businesspeople.

Both “Fair Is Fair Trade” and “Coffee, Thee & Me” are entirely hand silkscreen printed with 3 hand mixed colors and are sized to fit beautifully into either a standard 16″ x 20″ frame by trimming the border, or into an 18″ x 24″ frame as is with a 1″ matte.

“Fair Is Fair Trade” and “Coffee, Thee & Me” are now available for purchase from our webstore here in our “Benefit Prints” section where the sale of each item directly benefits a cause or charity that we support, or in our Etsy shop here.

Below are some photographs from the hand silkscreen printing process taken while printing in our studio. There are tons more process photos at our Flickr page here too.

412Creative + strawberryluna = love

Pittsburgh is BOOMING these days with smart, creative and cool people. When I first moved here on a whim many years ago, Pittsburgh was a perfectly nice city across the state from my home in Philadelphia. It seemed like an easy move to test the waters of living somewhere else.

Now? Pittsburgh is wicked awesome. And one of the new avenues of documenting and sharing the many ways in which this city has organically become a vibrant hub of creativity, design and culture is 412Creative. Utilizing multi-disciplinary talents of their own to showcase the same going on and growing around the city, 412Creative describes themselves as:

“Devoted to showcasing smart and effective design and advertising.  The website was motivated by a nagging question, one that pops up frequently when looking through magazines, surfing the Web or watching the news: “Who did that?”

To that end, we’re incredibly honored to have shared a recent Saturday with 412Creative’s Elvira Eichleay and Joey Kennedy so that they could put together this wonderful piece on our studio, our process and our creative lives in Pittsburgh.

To read the full interview profile and see many more lovely photographs by Joey Kennedy, just click here and visit 412Creative! We can’t wait to hang out again soon!

Hit Them With The Razzle Dazzle – WWI British Navy Ship Cammo

normal-wilkinson-inventor-of-dazzle-camouflage

The Father of Dazzle Camouflage, Norman Wilkinson

When you are interested in design, technology, perception AND history? (As I am.)  Sometimes a story comes along that feeds all 4 things.

This post, borrowed from Twisted Sifter does just this. And rather than blab on about why this is so damn cool, I’ll just let you check out an abridged version here and hopefully, marvel like we have at this ingeniuous and extremely cool graphic solve to a fatal problem of war.

For the full blog post with many more photographic examples, please visit Twisted Sifter or click on any image.

__________________________________________________________

You are the Fleet Admiral of the Navy in WWI what do you do?

THE SITUATION

You’re the Fleet Admiral of the Navy in World War I. Your ships are being sunk at an alarming rate by the devastatingly effective German U-Boat. The traditional camouflage isn’t working because your environment (sea and sky) changes with the weather. What do you do?

ww-i-dazzle-painting-camouflage

THE INSIGHT

World War I occurred from 1914–1918; back then sinking an enemy battleship was a three-step process:

Step 1: Locate your target’s position and plot its course.
Step 2: Determine the ship’s speed and confirm the direction it is heading
Step 3: Launch torpedo not directly at the ship, but where you think it’s going to be by the time the torpedo reaches the ship.

*Remember this is early 20th century warfare, weapons don’t travel at the speed they do today

So what’s your solution Fleet Admiral?

HIT THEM WITH THE RAZZLE DAZZLE

world-war-1-dazzle-camouflage

Forget about not being seen, that only solves their first problem. Focus on confusing them so they don’t know where you’re going. Then their torpedoes will be shot in vain because they thought you zigged when you really zagged.

British Artist and naval officer Norman Wilkinson had this very insight and pioneered the Dazzle Camouflage movement (known as Razzle Dazzle in the United States). Norman used bright, loud colours and contrasting diagonal stripes to make it incredibly difficult to gauge a ship’s size and direction.

It was cheap, effective, and widely-adopted during the War. Check out the incredible photographs below.

dazzle-painting-a-boat

*NOTE: Unfortunately the images are in black and white, being from the early 1900s and all, so the loud, bold colours will require a little imagination. Can you picture a fleet of electric yellow, orange and purple ships coming to get ya!

New release: We 3 Owls Goodmorning & Goodnight, Giclee art prints Part 2!

New "We 3 Owls" giclee art print set. Click here for more info or to purchase one or both prints.

Whoooooooo loves a happy family?? We do! And so should you.

Sometimes in working on sketches for clients, we get to try out new things, and new styles that wouldn’t always be a great fit for the super labor intensive, one-color-at-a-time method of hand screenprinting as we do with our rock posters and many art prints. Sometimes those sketches move forward, sometimes they don’t. Until now that is. Rather than just let some designs die a slow, sad death in a file somewhere even though we really like the art work, we’ve been mulling over the chance to create a new line of art prints in the form of giclees.

Introducing new little family and giclee art print set, our new “We 3 Owls Good Morning” and “We 3 Owls Goodnight” diptych giclee art prints. 3 is a magic number. Yes it is. It’s a magic number. And whoooo better to represent a tight knit little family, no matter how you make it, than 3 sweet Owls?

And, in a multi-part series of blog posts, we’re announcing their release into the world. Hooray! Both prints are now available either individually or as a set now at my website here and also in my Etsy shop here. We’re flexible! These 2 prints were designed to go perfectly together, but also are fully able to stand alone as well. Hence, we are offering them for sale either individually for $20 a piece, or as a true diptych set for $35. A nice little deal!

* Extra bonus: Use the coupon code STRAWBERRYLUNABLOG10 during checkout in my Etsy shop and receive 10% off your entire order! *

New "We 3 Owls Good Morning" giclee art print. Click for more info or to purchase.

“We 3 Owls Good Morning” – What a bunch of happy Owls waking up to a fresh new day and ready to take on the world. This print is designed to look great all by itself or also in tandem with the companion print We 3 Owls Goodnight, making a diptych set.

Do you remember how when you were little, and it was nighttime, the whole world seemed like a magical, mysterious place and you couldn’t, try as you might, just fall asleep like the grown ups said? This little baby fellow below knows that feeling too.

New "We 3 Owls Goodnight" giclee art print. Click for more info or to purchase.

Our giclee prints are all printed in-house with individual care per print, using high quality, no-acid, archival Epson Premium Matte art paper and high quality Epson archival pigment inks which are guaranteed fade resistant (for at least 100 years).

Size: Printed on 11″ x 14″ paper, image area measures 6.5″ x 9.5″. Sized to be flexible so that you can use either frame the print as is with a nice wide border, with an 11×14 sized frame, or you easily trim down the border area so that it can fit or 8.5 x 11 or 8×10 sized standard frame quite easily. If you would like, I can also do this for you!

Both prints are now available either individually for $20 or as a perfect set for $35 at my website here and also in my Etsy shop here. Hope that you enjoy!
