New release: Inara George silkscreened gig poster!

Inara George silkscreen poster: 2 color, all hand printed. Click for more info or to purchase.

Brand new releases are always exciting around here. Sure. But I’m *superduperextra* excited this month to share one of the new pieces that we’ve produced for Inara George, of the amazing band The Bird & The Bee, just one of a few new things we’re working on in collaboration with one of our favorite bands around this Fall.

This poster is a two-fer print, in a number of ways. First, this hand silkscreen printed poster covers 2  LA shows for Inara George this Fall on September 23rd at Bootleg Theater in and also at the Getty Center on November 5th with Van Dyke Parks. Second, we’ve used tricky overprints to get 3 bold colors from 2 screens. That’s our way! That’s what we love. We hope that you do too.

Simple, sweet but not always straightforward and deceptively complex. Hand silkscreened poster for 2 shows for the incomparable Inara George of The Bird & The Bee.

Mid-century throwback style always seems fresh, just like the lady herself. This is our all hand silkscreen printed poster for Inara George with hand mixed scarlet red and transparent cyan water-based acrylic screenprinting inks. Edition: 50, each of these limited edition posters are signed & numbered (by me, strawberryluna) Size: 16×22 inches (39.4 cm x 55.9 cm.) Paper: archival Cougar, White 100lb cover weight.

This poster will also be available on tour and at shows with Inara George throughout this fall, and especially her show at The Getty Center on November 5th, as well as also from my website here and also in my Etsy shop here.

Hello there! We’re really excited to finally share a new bit of design work with everyone. We were approached by the powerhouse design blog Design Milk
(huge shout out thanks to lovely Kelly at Design Crush for the recommendation) in May to be a part of their ongoing curated Designer Desktops series. Of course, being a fan of Design Milk for quite sometime I said yes right away.

Jaime, the founder of Design Milk, asked us to choose a design related quote and then work from there to create a suitable exclusive illustration for desktop backgrounds and Apple wallpapers. Preferably something which would also relate to design, naturally. When I came across this gem by Coco Chanel:

“I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.”

I fell in love instantly and we went with it. Read more about the inspiration for these designs here at Design Milk

Our Designer Desktops are FREE and available for download in multiple formats exclusively at Design Milk here for the entire month of July. New print release: Going To See My Baby Yellow!

New, all hand screenprinted 6-color silkscreen art print Going To See My Baby Yellow available now! (Click for more info or to purchase.)

Spring is finally here! And to match the growing warmth and springy feel, here is a new silkscreen art print release! Going To See My Baby Yellow, a brand new colorway of my super popular art print about bicycles, love and that special glee. You know the feeling.

This hand-pulled & hand screenprinted happy day is a brand new colorway of a very popular print that I did in 2007, but in a super small edition for the Screens’n’Spokes fundraiser, now returned in fresh spring lemony yellow and soft sky-blue, just for you.

Going To See My Baby Yellow is my 6-color, all hand screen printed art print with fresh lemon yellow, bright bike red, dark grey, black and soft transparent sky-baby-blue hand-mixed and non-toxic water based silkscreen inks. And yes! The sky-baby-blue cloud breaks the margin/border just like a good cloud should, and it’s partially transparent over the white margin. Tweet! Edition of 200. Size: 16 x22 inches (39.4 cm x 55.9 cm.) Paper: no acid, archival Cougar, White 100lb cover weight.

For more information about this print, or to purchase, visit my website here or check out my Etsy shop here.

Some of the previous colorways like Baby Blue, Orange, Lavender, and Sage are now all sold out, enabling us to donate to a cause we really have close to our hearts, The National MS Society. And, a portion of the sale of each of these prints is donated to The National MS Society as well .

New poster released: Ingrid Michaelson at The Fillmore, San Francisco

Poster for Ingrid Michaelson at The Fillmore in San Francisco, by strawberryluna. (Click for more info or to purchase.)

Hey smartie-sweetie-cuties, what’s up?

Here is a “new” poster release! I say “new” in “quotes” as the show date was from way back in November of 2010 (that’s like a lifetime ago!), but I didn’t receive my copies of the poster until just a few weeks ago, and somehow posting this little baby up slipped from my to-do list. Apologies!

Onward & upward: We were commissioned by the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco to do a special show poster for Ingrid Michaelson’s show there on 11/1/10 with The Guggenheim Grotto. In the classic Fillmore tradition, they print and give 1,000 copies of the posters created for their shows away at the end of the night to the fans as a big thanks. And this is that poster for Ingrid Michaelson’s show.

And it’s now available for purchase from my website here and also from my Etsy shop here.

More about this poster:

The Fillmore hosted the multi-talented musician, signer / songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, and as their tradition, which dates back to the 1960s, they handed out copies of this poster to the audience at the end of the show. We’re so proud to be a part of this incredible legacy and are tickled to do this poster for The Fillmore & Ingrid Michaelson.

This poster is an offset print, not screenprinted, it was printed by The Fillmore for the show. It’s a 3-color, design with an edition of 1,000. Of that 1,000 given to the fans at the show and to the bands’ members. Artists’ Edition of just 75 posters, each one hand signed & numbered by me, strawberryluna. Size: 13w x 19h inches (33 cm x 48.3 cm). Paper: thick and heavy white stock.

This poster was given away at the show in San Francisco and I have just a portion of the run available (less than 70!) for sale here, so they will go quick!

February is National Bird Feeding Month, tweet!

I am truly, a bird-nerd. I draw birds constantly, perhaps way too much, as anyone could tell from the preponderance of birds in our art and prints such as our  seasonal-based Cardinal series, this year’s 2011 Hello Birds Calendar, and We Fly On The Backs of Our Forebears, just to name a few. It’s no secret. I am also an avid bird feeder. I have feeders here at home and also at my studio and nothing makes me happier than a full house of hungry and chirping birds. When I am printing away in my city neighborhood studio in Friendship and the sparrows come and nibble while I’m laying down color after color, it’s really nice to have a little nature-based company.

Here at home, we have a really amazing variety of birds that come all year long and it changes with the seasons pretty dramatically. We get everything from CardinalsChickadees, Carolina Wrens and (my favorites) Mourning Doves to adorable little Titmice (yes! That is the plural of Titmouse, I checked!), beautiful Dark Eyed Juncos, Blue Jays, several types of Woodpeckers and many more. I and definitely keep my guide book to PA birds (a super thoughtful gift from Craig) close at hand so I can identify them all and geek-out dork style.

In honor of my amateur bird watching and feeding obsession, I wanted to do a post here about February being National Bird Feeding Month. So cool. If you are bird-friendly or interested in getting started feeding birds in your backyard, or learning more about migration and other neato things about our feathery friends, visit The National Bird Feeding Society website, The Audubon Society and/or check out the below information & links.

From the National Bird Feeding Society:

The National Bird-Feeding Society is proud to host and sponsor “National Bird-Feeding Month.”  This national event was created to advance and publicize the wild bird feeding and watching hobby.  Each February, we introduce and promote a new and unique theme. Our theme for 2011 is “Most Wanted – America’s Top Ten Backyard Birds.”

There are over 100 species of birds that visit bird feeders throughout the United States.  For 2011, the National Bird-Feeding Society selected 10 species in two geographic regions to highlight.  These 10 species are among the most colorful and widespread birds that use feeders, and will provide you with a wonderful, year-round, bird feeding experience.  View America’s most wanted backyard birds.

National Bird-Feeding Month was established in 1994.  Read more about the origin of this celebratory month.

To celebrate National Bird-Feeding Month, the National Bird-Feeding Society is pleased to provide a Guide to Better Bird Feeding.

Also, definitely check out this really nice piece on National Bird Feeding Month here at Etsy in the Storque, chock full of info and great vintage photos.

Happy birding this month!

New poster released: Ra Ra Riot w/ Chikita Violenta & We Barbarians

All new 2-color hand screenprinted poster for Ra Ra Riot. (Click to purchase or for more info.)

It’s a year in the making, but I’m so happy things work out the way that that do sometimes. We had originally talked with Ra Ra Riot‘s management over a year ago about working together on a poster, and here were are, October 2010 when it all came together. Huzzah!

The show was amazing, and surprising too. We arrived home from a great weekend in DC for Crafty Bastards just in time for me to edition & sign the posters for Sunday night’s Ra Ra Riot 10/2 show, gulp some homemade soup for dinner and run on down to Diesel for the show. As it turned, out, I was selling my posters behind the merch booth that evening. It was good spot to catch the amazing openers We Barbarians (from California) and Chikita Violenta (hailing from Mexico City), all of whom were super rad as well. Thanks to Rachel, the bands, & everyone at the show for great night 🙂

Info about this new poster release:

Modern & looking back to the past, like thinking about living off of the backs of our ancestors. That’s a bit how Ra Ra Riot‘s awesome sound feels. We love them! And we’re super aced to do this poster for their Pittsburgh, PA show.

New art print released: Summer Cardinal, the 3rd 2010 Seasons Print

4 color, all hand screenprinted art print "Summer Cardinal". (click for more info or to purchase)

Huzzah! It’s summer, fully. The 2nd of 3 new releases today, this is my Summer Cardinal art print. And I have to be honest, it’s been done printed, cut, and ready to fly home since the first day of summer. Mea culpa on the slow to blog it here (in)action.

But, summer is all about being laid back right? Right. Sweet.

Quick story about this print. It was originally designed as a 5-color print, with a transparent metallic gold ink as the last layer. Somehow in my head, rather than expecting the metallic gold to work as a true transparent ink and blend with the pink base/1st color to make a new color (in this case, a peachy coral), I thought that it would sit on top. Essentially making a misty soft metallic gold overlay all subtly sparkly.

Yeah….no. Nope. (See last photo below.) I pulled two prints and decided to stop there, making this a 4 color print.

That’s screenprinting!

Summer Cardinal is a part of my new Seasons series. This is the seventh print in series of seasonal prints that I’ll be releasing. Ready? Here’s the mind-blowing part = there will be 4 per year. Crazy, right?

This year for the Seasons series, in 2010 I am doing things a little differently, rather than making a new image for each season, I’ve decided to follow the same bright red fellow in the same scene, across all 4 seasons. And here for Summer Cardinal, in honor of the softer, breezier and warmer life of summer, our little red fellow is enjoying the gathering sunset of a lovely night ahead in twilight pinks.

Summer Cardinal is my 4-color, all hand screenprinted art print with tender summer night pink, bark brown, scarlet red, fresh-leaf green hand mixed and non-toxic water based inks. All prints are hand signed and titled. Edition of 500. Size: 16 x22 inches (39.4 cm x 55.9 cm.) Paper: archival Cougar, White 100lb cover weight. $25.

This print is ready to fly home with you and available for purchase here at my website now!

2 new art prints released: Lovebirds & Going To See My Baby Lavender

New 7-color hand screenprinted art print, "Lovebirds" now available. (click for more info or to purchase!)

Ok! This is a quick post as I really should be packing my clothes for Flatstock & SXSW in Austin TX (see this previous post for more info), so I will keep this one short and sweet.

I jammed out two brand new art prints this past weekend in a marathon printing run. 2 days, 8 screens, 13 colors, 1,000+ pulls, 200+ prints =  2 new prints. BOOM!

The first print is above, and it’s called “Lovebirds”. When we were working on our poster for St. Vincent, we started playing around with the flower illustration and found that it made very cute little birdies, we added a heart and ta-da! Lovebirds.

The second new art print is below, and it’s a fresh new colorway of my very popular “Going To See My Baby” print, now in Lavender. I love that lemony cloud action. I have to say as well that it’s kinda funny that both new prints feature hearts and love and romance quite prominently. Spring is here!

New 6-color hand screenprinted art print, "Going To See My Baby Lavender" now available. (click for more info or to purchase!)

It’s been really awesome getting to work out of my new studio space, rockin’ out to music and watching movies too while printing. In fact, I did a little Twitter contest while printing “Lovebirds” and asked if anyone could name the movie that I was watching in the background of a Photoshop mock, and wouldn’t you know it? Someone (@kurometarikku) got it right on the money by identifying “The Great Race” from a terrible screenshot. Amazing! Check out the photo below:

The Great Race in the background. Goofy, yes. But Jack Lemmon never disappoints.

And here are a few process shots of each print, sorry that they are not up on Flickr yet, but they will be next week! Apologies for some of the greyed out light. I do live and work in Pittsburgh, PA afterall. The actual prints are on lovely & crisp white paper 🙂

Going To See My Baby Sage is my 6-color, all hand screen printed art print with holiday green sage, bright bike red, dark grey, black and soft transparent lemon hand mixed and non-toxic water based inks.
