Strawberryluna

Flatstock 29, SXSW Festival & Austin, TX here we come!

All of the Flatstock 29 identity designed by exclusively us at strawberryluna this year!

Around these parts? Mid-March means the opening of carnie season when we start our new year of shows. And it’s super exciting to always get to break out of the evergrey of a long long  Pittsburgh winter (ummm, it snowed this past weekend. I mean, come on!) with our first trip and show of the year to sunny, warm and awesome Austin, TX.

Don’t mess with it.

We are super honored and really proud this year to have been asked to design all of the Flatstock 29 official and exclusive identity work, from banners, badges, posters, handbills and more. We also hand silkscreen printed a limited edition of the Flatstock 29 poster that we will have for sale at our booth in Austin, and then also on our website here too. If you are down at Flatstock and see these pieces, right on! We did our job well 🙂

We’ll also have a HUGE slew of Test Prints that I’ve been working on for a top-secret project (but details will be coming soon) for early next year. In the meantime, hopefully some of your will enjoy the current crop of them. ‘Cause Cousin? We got a bunch for ya.

What is Flatstock? It’s over 75-100 currently working poster artists coming to show their talents, display and sell their work and talk with new people about what we do and why. And yep, hire us! And yes, Flatstock Austin is FREE to attend and open to the public!

The details for you:

The very first Flatstock Poster Convention of the year will once again be held in Austin, Texas during the SXSW Festival. This is our 29th Flatstock to date, and the Austin Flatstock is always FREE  to attend & definitely wide open to the public. We are in a new room this year, so check below for a convenient map to help you find over 75 poster artists from around the world displaying & selling their rock posters. Hope to see you there!

“The FLATSTOCK poster show series is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organized in 2002 as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular website GigPosters.com. The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties.

The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who’ve created it — they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.”

Alabama & Judson College, here I come!

Pittsburgh is awfully cold and grey in the winter, and I’ll tell you, a little Southern hospitality sounds perfect right about now. Lucky me!

I am heading to Judson College in Marion, Alabama for a few days this week for a solo exhibition in the Marian Tucker Acree Gallery, and to work with the Art Dept. students on a silscreen printmaking demonstration. Having never been to Alabama, I’m excited.

The schedule breaks down like this:

  • 2/9/11 (Wednesday) – The exhibition, Strawberryluna! opens Feb. 9 and continues through March 6. The show features a selection of my posters and prints and will be on view at the Marian Tucker Acree Gallery. There will be an artist’s reception on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 4 – 6 pm in the gallery,
  • 2/10/11 – (Thursday) I will give a brief lecture on my work in Tucker Recital Hall from 11 am until noon on Thursday, Feb. 10.  I will also be making a print with the art department students in Mead Hall on Thursday at 1 pm. Anyone is welcome!

All events are free and open to the public. The works in this exhibition are for sale. For more information about the work, the schedule, or the show, please contact  Dept. Head Jamie Adams at 334.683.5251.

FS 26: Thank you Chicago!

On the road to Chicago!

Thank you so much awesome people of Chicago, Pitchfork Festival & Flatstock Poster Show!

We had a fun & pretty crazy & event filled time this past long weekend in your city. Thanks to everyone we met & talked to at Flatstock, and moreover, thanks for buying some of our work. We’re always mega appreciative and blown away by the awesome people we get to meet on these roadtrips.

Highlight bands we got to take turns to see and loved: LCD Soundsystem (!), Sleigh Bells, Pavement, and Kurt Vile. Super great sets by all, and we heard the lovely St. Vincent & Beach House & Local Natives all kick ass from afar.

The below is just a few parts of our trip, in photos. From Pittsburgh, to the Renegade Handmade store for the Rock Paper Show book release party, to the Post Family gallery for The Cantankerous Hellfighter show featuring collaborative work by our friends Delicious Design League & Aesthetic Apparatus, to Humboldt Park, The Congress Plaza Hotel, Flatstock, & everywhere in between.

See you next year!

Renegade Craft Fair is one of the premiere independent DIY showcases of all things art, craft, and handmade. Renegade Craft Fairs are held in several cities across the US every year – including Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles & Austin.  The fair is known for being one of the first events of its kind, and for having the top-notch indie-craft artists and designers who travel from all over the map to participate. Renegade got its start in Chicago’s Wicker Park in the fall of 2003, and has spread like wildfire ever since.

With over 300 artists coming together in historic McCarren Park in Brooklyn to sell our handmade work, this year’s Renegade Craft promises to be as amazing as ever, if not more so. ROMG I’m so excited to announce that I am returning to the fantastic Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn, New York this year! Flatstock & SXSW: Here we come Austin, TX!

It’s really Spring! And for us that means the first Flatstock of the year, in Austin, TX during the HUGE music festival SXSW. We’ll be working part of the time and having a blast the other. Come on and see us and close to 100 (that’s right) poster artists from all over the world, showing our work and talking shop with music industry folks, poster art fans and the wide open general public.

We will be debuting new posters and new art prints as well as bringing a slew of Test Prints too, so it’s going to be rad.  Come say hi!

Co-presented by the American Poster Institute (API) and SXSW, Flatstock 24 will display the works of more than 100 artists from across North America and the globe. Posters representing decades of styles, colors and techniques will be on display and for sale as well as additional merchandise. Show up early and be ready to be overwhelmed with amazing posters. (You might want to bring some dough since you won’t want to leave empty handed!) The exhibition is free and open to the public. Check out this year’s exhibiting artists.

The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. Flatstock provides an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who created it.

Making SXSW a true music collector’s paradise, don’t forget to set time aside for the Austin Record Convention in the same exhibit hall and the Texas Guitar Show in the adjacent hall.

The legendary Smokey Robinson will visit Flatstock 24 on Thursday afternoon following his keynote address to sell his limited edition prints designed by Shepard Fairey. Swing by to get your one-of-a-kind poster signed by both Smokey and Shepard.

About the API: The American Poster Institute is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving the poster artist community and promoting the art form. The Flatstock shows provide the American Poster Institute with a way to present poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of styles they represent.

About SXSW: The first South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) was held in 1987 in Austin, Texas. Despite the fact that Austin was not a Top 20 major market at the time, the background and character of the city made it a perfect location for the conference. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or the internet. And Austin continues to be the perfect location.
